Fire believed to have been caused by a defective fire-place caused considerable damage to the residence of R. P. Roedell, 264 Hill Street, about 11 o’clock last night.

Members of the household noticed smoke shortly after 10:45 but were unable to see any other signs of fire. An alarm was turned into the fire department, engine Co. No. 4 responding. A slight delay was caused as the location of the blaze could not ascertain.

One of the firemen, opening the door of the pantry, found the room a blaze. The fire, however, was extinguished with chemicals, every effort being made to avoid damage by the use of water.

Damage was done to the pantry and several pieces of valuable silverware were melted by the heat of the flames. The home was but recently remolded and redecorated.

Members of the Roedell family were loud in the praise of the efforts of the fire-fighters, and stated that the firemen arrived in record time after the alarm was sent in. It is believed that much greater damage was prevented by the use of chemicals.

Mrs. Charity May Roedell, widow of R. P. Roedell, 78 of 100 South Grandview,
died at 6:40 PM Friday at Mercy hospital Dubuque. Friends may call after 4 PM
Sunday at Haudensheild funeral home, 1258 Main, Funeral services will be held at
2 PM Monday at the funeral home. David B. Hersey of Jehovah's Witness will
officiate. Burial will be in the Linnwood cemetery. She was born at Oelwein,
Iowa on May 23, 1881, daughter Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wilson Scothorn and lived 57
years in Dubuque. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Louise R. Landgraf, Dubuque;
one son, Richard P. Roedell Dubuque; five grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Molly Rood of Molalla, OR and Mrs. Grace
Deremo, Melrose Park, Illinois and three brothers, Jarges W. Scothorn, Storm
Lake,of Iowa Robert Scothorn, Sutherland, Iowa and George Scothorn, Nemaha,

Robert T. Roedell, 73, died at Finley hospital Friday morning at 3 o'clock. The body has been taken to the home of his son, R. P. Roedell, 264 Hill Street.

Funeral services are to be conducted at the Walton and Schroeder chapels Sunday afternoon at an hour to be announced later. Burial be made in the Linwood Cemetery.

Mr. Roedell was born in Quincy, Illinois October 15, 1852 and has been a resident of Dubuque for the past forty years. He was a painter by trade. He is survived by four sons, F. G., R. C., R. P. and A. T. Roedelll all of Dubuque, and one daughter, Mrs. Alex Duccuni, Dubuque.

Mrs. Bella T. Roedell passed away at the family resident at 508 West Locust Street this morning at 8 o'clock. She was born in England Feb. 22, 1853, and had resided in Dubuque for many years.
She was prominent in various organizations being a recorder for the court of Honor and Royal Neighbor Lodges and a member of the Orioles, the Maccabees and the Women's Relief Corps. No. 37.
