    Obituary for Shirley Belle "Dot" Garrett

    Shirley Belle "Dot" Garrett, 101, of Damascus, VA passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, October 24, 2022 surrounded by family. She was born on November 3, 1920, a daughter of the late Luther and Fannie Belle Reid. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Garrett; a brother, Vance Reid; a sister, Sarah Bernice Wright; a daughter, Jean Cole; and three sons-in-law, Bob Cole, Jim Dorton, and Bob Copenhaver.

    She was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus where she held several offices and other jobs. She was widowed for 67 years. She was devoted to her faith and her family. She was ten days short of her 102nd birthday.

    She is survived by two daughters, Becky Copenhaver and Annette Dorton; five grandchildren, Jimmy Cole (Sue), Mike Cole (Jennifer), Tim Copenhaver (Carol), Cindy Crussell (Bryan), and Chris Dorton (Melissa); 12 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren and two nieces, Ann Gorney and Sarah Wright. The family would like to express a special thank you to her caregivers Betty Landis and Nancy Hand, special friends Connie Carty and Donnie Foster; and special neighbor, Todd Baker.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Garrett Funeral Home or at any other times at the residence of her daughter, Becky Copenhaver, 31492 Blue Springs Road, Meadowview, VA 24361. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 PM Thursday in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Eggers officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 3:00 PM Friday, October 28, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. Pallbearers will be Cody Cole, Adam Cole, Camden Copenhaver, Zachary Copenhaver, Nicholas Copenhaver, Carter Dorton, Ryan Maynard, and Tyler Norris. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roger Copenhaver, Donnie Foster, Todd Baker, Cory Cornett, and Emory Carty. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O.
