She moved to a retirement home in Perry, IA in 1994. She said that her Mom died when she was only 7 years old. She moved in with Albert and Mary Kuester until they moved to Minnesota a few years later. Then Martin and Mamie Studt took her in and raised her. The Studts lived on 'Main' street in Luzerne which was about a block from the Chicago and Northwestern Rail Road tracks. During world War I she was among the kids of the town who would run down to the tracks when a troop train would pass through. (Somehow they could tell by the sound of the whistle.) The troops would throw pieces of hardtack out the window of the train to the kids, and they would pick it up and eat it. The day the war ended Dorothy Kouba heard about it first and came running up the street to the Studt house banging two pot lids together to make noise. Martha joined her with two more kids and they went marching around town in a "Victory Parade" with the rest of the kids! She said that someone made a dummy resembling the Kaiser and hung it from a tree. She said it hung there for almost two years!

    Notes:

He came to the US with his sister, Meta. He learned to understand English by reading Wallace's Farmer and continued his education at the Luzerne Lutheran parochial school. He had to walk 4 1/2 miles to get to it, often in cold and snow. After grade school years he worked on his Uncle Fred's farm and saved his money until the day he could start his own family and farm. William and Johanna bought a half section (320 acres) or very good land northeast of Blairstown in 1908. They built a home and lived there for 36 years, farming, raising their children and becoming quite prosperous - even constructing a complete set of new buildings. They retired and moved to Blairstown in 1944. From humble beginnings, William was able to make something of himself in America. In addition to a fine family and prosperous farm, he was secretary of the Farmer's elevator at Blairstown for twelve years and director of the Farmers Grain Dealer's Association of Iowa from 1920 to 1930. In a newspaper article, William was quoted as saying, "If you are born in the lower classes (in Germany), you stay there, there's no way to get out. Anybody who doesn't like America doesn't know what he's talking about. It's the best country in the world in which to live."
Came to the US with his sister, Meta.
Came to USA at age 12 with his Mother Wilehlmina Tiedemann and sister Meda Niebuhr.

William married Kluss, Johanna Sophia Dorothea on 17 Dec 1902 in Luzerne, Benton, Iowa, USA. Johanna (daughter of Kluess, Friedrich Johann H "Fred" and Tatge, Emma) was born on 15 Jun 1884 in Luzerne, Benton, Iowa, USA; died on 9 Jun 1957 in Luzerne, Benton, Iowa, USA; was buried after 9 Jun 1957 in Lutheran Cemetery, Luzerne, Benton, Iowa, USA. Notes:

She was the oldest of six sisters and three brothers. She attended Luzerne lUtheran parochial school where she and William met. Johanna was a caregiver all of her life, probably starting at home with her nine siblings. She also cared for her ten children, her mother-in-law and William when he became ill. Having lived on a farm all of her life, Johanna was quoted in a newspaper article in 1928 as saying she wouldn't care to live in a city. "I wouldn't think of trying to rear a family in town. Think what an array of milk bottles one would have on his porch each day for a family of twelve persons. Grandma Niebuhr's chickens were a familiar site of the farm. Story has it that she once broke her arm while gathering eggs - but didn't break one egg. When a newspaper reporter asked her, in 1928, what had she done in the last year that she had never done before, she answered, "I spent the night at a hotel. It was when the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa met at Cedar Rapids as as Mr. Niebuhr is a director, he attended. I mentioned that I never had stayed at a hotel and the children coaxsed me to go. We stayed at the Montrose. I also never had seen girls smoke before, but they seemed to puff away quite unconcernedly there."

    Notes:

Her grand daughter, Lucille tells the story about when grandma Martha, was out in the pasture. Eldo, her son, asked for a drink of water. She went to the well and started to pump a drink for him, when the boards gave way and she fell into the well. She managed to stay afloat by hanging onto the pipe going to the pump and then started to yell for help. Eldo was no help, because he was too small, and was more interested in retreiving his hat which fell in when his mom did. The cows were curious at all of the noise, so they gathered around and looked down in the well. Father Henry saw the cows gathered around so he decided he'd better check it out. When he got there he could do nothing because he had no way to get her out. There was a neighbor painting his house nearby who came over to see what the commotion was about. He ran back and got his ladder and lowered it down into the well to get her out.
