Charlene Georgia Thoma, of Boonville, MO died Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Missouri University Medical Center in Columbia.

Visitation will be held at Davis Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p, pm on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015. Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015 at 10AM. Interment will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Boonville. Pall Bearers will be Tom Loesing, Melvin Butler, Harold S. Haller, Earl E. Haller, Tara J. Loesing, and Cameron Thoma.

Charlene was born September 2, 1924 in New Franklin, MO to Frank J. “Pete” Thoma and Margaret Ellen Haller Thoma. She became a resident of Boonville at the age of three months and resided there until her death. She graduated from Laura Speed Elliot High School in Boonville here she was a member of the National Honor Society. She received the DAR History Medal and three scholarships. Charlene was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boonville and was the Superintendent of the Primary Department for fifteen years with a perfect attendance record. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the American Women’s Club. Charlene was employed as bookkeeper at Viertel’s Storage garage until fire destroyed the business. She later became employed with the Boonville Daily News as bookkeeper/officer manager for 35 years, 2 months and 5 days and retired in March, 1987.

Charlene is survived by Barry, Ann and Cameron Thoma, Frederick, MD; Russ and Tina Thoma, LaGrange, GA, Jonathan Thoma , Tracie Harris, Boonville; Helen Thoma-Garcia, Cindy Thoma-Wilt, Jeffery and Joe Cleveland, NM; Alvera Baslee, Boonville; Eddie and Jo Haller, Boonville, Thomas and Gina Loesing; Becky Thoma, Tara Loesing and Teri Loesing, Boonville.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; Brothers Bill and Jack Thoma, Aunt Elva Haller Johnson, Uncles Henry W. Thoma and Edson Haller; Grandparents William A. and Minnie Edson Haller; William H. and Minnie Rabin Thoma; great nephew Cole D. Thoma; and niece Deborah Wheeler.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of the American Diabetes Association.

Notes:

In the church records for the death of Johann Ludwig Thomæ it lists his survivors. It lists his two sons Lorenz and Lorenz; five daughters Anna Margaretha, Barbara, Margaretha Barbara, and Dorothea. It the church records it lists a Lorenz Thomæ Sr. and a Lorenz Thomæ, Jr. While I have always thought this to be a father son relationship, it is not. Instead it refers to the two Lorenzs in the same family.

But then I noticed that, in 1853 and 1854, the Regierungs- und Intelligenzblatt für das Herzogthum Coburg [Admininstrative and Intelligence Bulletin for the Duchy of Coburg] was running announcements about the people who were leaving Sonnefeld, Frohnlach and Ebersdorf for "Nordamerika". On Issue No. 66, Saturday, 19 August 1854, it mentioned two of your ancestors, side by side, on the same page. I've attached for you the copy of the top halves of the two pages in the original German. Here is the English translation of the following announcements:

In 1778 Johann Paul Thomæ was living in House 51a in Hofstädten. In 1811 after the death of Johann Paul it came into the possession of Johann Ernst Thomæ and his wife Sabine. After the death of Maria Savina nee’ Bechmann Thomæ in into the possession of Johann Ludwig Thomæ. And Barbara Thomæ was awarded the Brennhaus. In 1835 Johann Ludwig came into possession of both House 51a and 51b. In 1852 the house came into the possession of Lorenz Thomæ, Sr. and in 1844 passed into the house of Lorenz Thomæ, Jr. Finally in 1854 it came into the possession of Ludwig Thomæ, Sr. (the father of the potter). Then in 1855 in passed to Margaretha Thomæ and her brothers and sisters. So I come to the conclusion that Lorenz Thoma immigrated to America after the death of this father in 1854.

Death of F. H. Rabine
On Saturday, August 19, 1876, John H. Light shot and killed F. H. Rabine. They were both engaged in the pottery business at Calhoun, Mr. Rabine for something over three years and Light about one. They had, it seems, become jealous of each other and from ill words came threats of bodily harm. This was probably the result of being in the same business, and the tragedy seemed to have been brought on by the tell-tale peculiarity of a Calhounite, who it seems, reported to Rabine, that Light, who had just finished burning a kiln of ware, remarked to this third party that Rabine, or some of Rabine's hands, had put something in his slack or glazing, which had seriously damaged the ware, in fact he claimed that out of $200 he would only realize $20 worth of good ware. This accusation was borne to the ears of Rabine, who became highly incensed. This was the prelude to the fatal difficulty. On Saturday, as above stated, both parties met on the platform at the railroad depot, just as the western bound passenger train arrived. Rabine, armed with a good sized club, which he carried concealed by his side, accosted Light, demanding to know if he, Light, had accused him of putting something in his slack. Light replied that he had said that either he, Rabine, or some of his hands had done so. A few words passed when Rabine dealt Light a heavy blow on the nose with his club felling him and repeated the blow twice after Light was down. The first blow broke Light's nose and stunned him, as soon as he recovered sufficiently to understand things he tried to rise to his feet and draw a revolver, as he did so Rabine started to run when Light fired two shots in quick succession at the fleeing man both shots taking effect in his back near the spine. Rabine, after being shot, jumped from the platform, ran a few steps and fell. He dropped his club and regaining his feet ran home, a distance of about 250 yards. Arriving at the house he sat down in the door way and said to his wife: "John Light has shot and killed me." These were his last and only words, and he fell over dead, not living two minutes after reaching his doorstep.

Mrs. Rabine became frantic at once, and soon the neighbors were aroused. Light went home, but was soon told that he had killed Rabine. He expressed no regret, but stated he was willing to stand his trial. Such, says the Clinton Democrat, was the substance of the matter as related by eye witnesses.

An inquest was held over the body on Sunday morning. Light was arrested, but waiving examination before a justice, he gave bail in the sum of $2,000 to appear the next day at the circuit court, then in session at Clinton. Judge Wright empanneled a special grand jury, and an indictment was found of manslaughter in the second degree.

John H. Light, still a resident of Calhoun, was of medium height, light hair, blue eyes, and rather prepossessing in appearance and thirty-five years of age. He was born in Batavia, Clearmont County, Ohio. He had a wife, but no children.

Rabine, the man killed, was a German, and came to Calhoun from Huntingdale, and to the latter place from Knob Noster. He had followed the business in both places successfully, and had removed to Calhoun to get on a line of railway, and to enlarge his facilities and increase the manufacture of his wares. He left a wife and three children.

The pistol used was an Allan's patent seven-shooter, No. 22 cartridge.

The trial came off on the 29th of August, ten days after the fight, and the following constituted the jury: E.S. Morgan, foreman; S.W. Billingsley, D.E.A. Price, John Hopton, Richard Marshall, George Kellums, Robert Gilbert, J.H. Cannon, William Ellis, Daniel Golden, G.W. Hancock and E.O. Price.

The verdict was: "We, the jury, find the defendant not guilty." He was immediately discharged by command of Judge Wright.
