  • Notes 
    • Her grand daughter, Lucille tells the story about when grandma Martha, was out in the pasture. Eldo, her son, asked for a drink of water. She went to the well and started to pump a drink for him, when the boards gave way and she fell into the well. She managed to stay afloat by hanging onto the pipe going to the pump and then started to yell for help. Eldo was no help, because he was too small, and was more interested in retreiving his hat which fell in when his mom did. The cows were curious at all of the noise, so they gathered around and looked down in the well. Father Henry saw the cows gathered around so he decided he'd better check it out. When he got there he could do nothing because he had no way to get her out. There was a neighbor painting his house nearby who came over to see what the commotion was about. He ran back and got his ladder and lowered it down into the well to get her out.
